The Personal Goals Worksheet
Today’s topic I want to cover off is all about personal goals and getting clear on your personal goals. And the reason why this has come up is because I’ve just finished a session with a clientthe where we’re reviewing the business, but also reviewing their personal goals. And I want to share the Personal Goals Worksheet with you in a minute and a tool that I’m using with clients. But the reason why it’s so important is because we work so hard in our businesses, we make so many sacrifices, we take so many risks, and we want to make sure that it’s for the right reasons.
To me, it’s not really good enough just to focus on making money, or having a successful business, if we’re not clear about why we’re doing it and if it doesn’t align with what’s important to us personally. I know a lot of people who are successful in their businesses, but then other things are affected or impacted, whether it’s their health, whether it’s their family, relationships, and they are not fulfilled by having a successful business. So, I really want you to think about that, be clear on what your personal goals are.
Now, the business and the clients that I just finished up with, or had the session with, are past clients of mine. I used to work with them about six years ago and they’re extremely successful. There’s three directors, and they definitely don’t need me to help them make more money in their business, even though that is something which we’re going to look at. For them, it was about getting to a stage in their lives where they want to step away from their business, let the next generation come through. But none of those three directors were really clear on what their next stage might look like, what they’re working towards, and why they want more free time. So, they wanted to get clear on those personal goals.
The video shows an example of one of the directors filling out the Personal Goals Worksheet that I’ve included down below. And what it does is, it helps give you some structure around different categories, different personal categories that you need to think about. Things like… family and friends, health and fitness, travel and experiences, some wealth creation and investment strategies, and also lastly, how you really want to be remembered when you’re finally gone. What do you want others to say about you? How do you want to be remembered?
And then the Personal Goals Worksheet, as you’ll see if you download it, also steps those categories out into different years… one year, two years, five years and ten years. I think it’s a fantastic exercise for you to do, to understand what’s really important in your life. Sit down with your partner, your husband, your wife, whoever in your life that’s important, sit down with them and talk about these things together. You’ll have your own personal goals, they might have their own, but there may be some common ones as well that you want to discuss and get alignment around.
Then you can design your business to achieve those personal goals. If you don’t have those personal goals in mind from the outset, then your business may end up becoming something that doesn’t help you achieve those goals. You might feel trapped in it, and so it is important to always have those personal goals in mind, and then design your business around it.
Hopefully you find the Personal Goals Worksheet useful. Let me know if you need a hand with that, and how it aligns with your business goals and how we can structure the business to achieve those personal goals. And definitely let me know if you need a hand.
